what’s your purpose in life?
We were having a discussion on “The Purpose Driven Life” on Sunday. It’s just so coincidental that when I wanted to get the book our sunday school teachers decided that they would be using the book for sunday school discussions. Not that it isn’t a good thing anyway. :)
We touched on the first 2 days, “It all starts with God” and “You are not an accident”. Ever so often I think about what I want, my goals, dreams and the like. We try to give our life some purpose, but we simply forget that the purpose of our lives is decided not by ourselves but by God, our creator. Only the Maker knows what’s the exact purpose and function of His creation. Perhaps that’s why sometimes we don’t feel content of fulfilled even when we have achieved all the goals we’ve set for ourselves, because the purpose of our lives does not only lie in the goals we hope to achieve. Even so, when we have some idea of what God’s purpose for us is, sometimes it’s just so hard to obey Him because what He wants for us may not be what we want for ourselves. I guess we just have to slowly learn to obey Him, constantly reminding ourselves that we’re living for Him and not ourselves.
Another learning point was that everything in our lives has already been planned by our Creator. Everything about us, our family background, race, our experiences… they have all been planned by Him for His purpose even before we were born. I know that there are times when I’ve complained about things and wished that I could change some of these, expecially when it comes to some of my experiences. But knowing that it’s all part of His plan really does make me feel better. So often we may think that another alternative is better, but if we took that other route, can we really guarantee that we will be more happy than we are now, and that that alternative is better for us? It’s about learning to trust that God wants to give us the best. We may not see it that way, but as time passes and we can put parts of our lives into better perspective, we’ll understand a little more of His works in our lives.
“It is in Christ that we find out who we are and what we are living for. Long before we first heard of Christ,… He had His eyes on us, had designs on us for glorious living, part of the overall purpose He is working out in everything and everyone.” - Ephesians 1:11
