people and lifts

The lifts in my block are those with a glass panel in the middle, so that when you’re in the lift, you can look out and see what’s going on on the floors where the lift landing is. I guess having that glass panel there may have some advantages, but one thing I simply can’t understand is why some people just like to stand so close to the lift door while waiting for the lift. And by close, I mean that they’re standing less than a meter away from the the door. And with their face right in front of the glass panel too!

Well technically there’s nothing wrong with that, except that you may be blocking the way for people who are trying to get out of the lift. But just imagine the situation where you’re alone in the lift. From where you’re standing, you are able to see the glass panel, even though you’re not right in front of it. And suddenly as the lift is moving, you see a huge, expressionless face appearing in front of the glass panel. A moment later, the face disappears. It really gives you a shock sometimes! Especially if you’re in the lift alone late at night. It doesn’t help that the lights in the lift have an orange tint to it. And those who like so stand so close to the lift door tend to be old ladies. x.X

My dear neighbours who take the lift at the sixth floor, could you please stand a bit further from the glass panel the next time? I’ve had enough shocks from seeing those faces, thank you vey much.

I’ve complained about people not being courteous when boarding the train on more than one occasion, and today I realised that some people are discourteous when it comes to taking the lift too. I was alone in the lift, and when I reached the groud floor and about to walk out, this lady who was waiting for the lift just decides to squeeze into the lift from my side. Sigh. Does it kill you to wait for a few seconds for me to get out of the lift? And it’s not as though there’s a lot of people waiting for the lift, and you’re afraid that you’ll have to wait for the next one. Ok… maybe on the other hand she might have been in a big hurry to go home and cook lunch or something.

Met a middle-aged couple in the lift on my way back. They entered the lift first, and the man pressed the button on the 6th floor. I was standing at the other end of the life, and busy sending an sms then. Usually when that happens, the person pressing the button would (1) ask which floor I was going to, (2) assume that I was going to the same floor and close the door or (3) just close the door anyway, and if I was going to a different floor I would press the button after I was done sending my sms. Usually it’s the first 2 cases. It was only after I finished sending my message that I realised that the lift door was still wide open. Turns out that the couple were just standing there, waiting for me to press the button to close the door. (!!!) Instead of letting all 3 of us stand in the lift look weird with the lift door wide open, I really wonder why either one of them hadn’t asked me which floor I was heading to, or to press the buttons when both of them saw that I was engrossed in sending my message. Sigh. Even an extremely loud cough or something would do! Do other people do this too?

online translators

The English to Japanese translation on Babel Fish kind of sucks. When I typed in “this week”, the translation given was この週. この週! Yes it does literally translate to “this week”, but the correct translation should be 今週.

今週はやすみです。 しゅくだいがありますから、勉強しています。 再来週の月曜日にBS108テストがあります。 :(

Being the very bored person that I am now, I tried translating the 3 sentences I typed below using the same translator back into English. And this was that I got:

This week quickly it is being completed. It is the palpus く to be, because it is, it studies. Monday of re-next week there is a BS 108 test.

x.X The first 2 sentences make no sense at all, but at least the last one is kind of understandable. (For the curious, I was trying to say that i’m on holiday this week. And because I have homework to do (more like tutorials and lab reports anyway), i’m studying. I also have a BS108 test in 2 weeks’ time, on a Monday.)

Well, we all know you can’t trust those online translators anyway, since they do the translation literally and not by meaning. Somehow the English to Chinese translation seems a bit better though, at least for words that i’ve tried before.

weird phone call

Recieved a phone call from some weird person just now. She was speaking in Chinese and advertising some sort of travel promotion, and I couldn’t be bothered to listen to what she was saying. But it was along the lines of going down to their company or something, and they’ll give you an mp3 player or some big discount. And so, after she went on and on like some sort of advertisement, she asked me if I was single or married, and then for my age. And the last thing she said before she put down the phone? Oh sorry this promotion is meant for married couples. -.-; What a waste of my time, and it’s not like I was interested in any case.

i’m so hardworking. like real.

Was up till 1+ am last night trying to answer the questions for my practical report. The one where I had to plot 12 graphs. Plotting the last graph and answering the rest of the questions seemed to take forever because of all those tiny errors here and there which I wouldn’t have realised if I wasn’t discussing with Serene (thanks girl!).

And so i’m finally done with that report and there’s one more to be done. I really hope I never have to do another kinetics experiement for the rest of my life. (Doubt so though.) Oh the horrors of having to type in and look at 1.5 pages full of numbers until your eyes are blur, having to make sense of all the data and plot so many graphs.

4A gathering

Had a 4A class gathering at Marina last night. We had steamboat of course, because that’s what people usually go to Marina for at night. Half the class was present, which is certainly not too bad for a class gathering. (I can’t even remember when the previous one was.)

After all these years since we’ve left Fairfield, most of us still look the same actually. Even the army guys. Can’t say so for the people whom I haven’t seen in what feels like forever though.

It’s a good thing that I decided to go in the end. The night turned out quite nicely, and it’s nice catch up a bit with your old classmates. :)
