the power of colours

Went for this talk on colour analysis today. It’s about learning whether your skin tone is warm or cool, and which colours suit you. Some people would think that learning about this sort of thing is pointless, but it’s pretty interesting and useful actually! When you compare the effect of different colours being worn on the same person, you can actually tell the difference when the more suitable colours are worn as compared to the less suitable ones.

I’ve always had the impression that Asians would be considered as having warm skin tones and Caucasians cool ones, but apparently most people have cool skin tones. You learn something new everyday!

There are various ways to test whether you have a warm or cool skin tone, or if you’re one of those few who are neutral toned and can wear most colours and look good in it. We were taught to rub our hands together for a few times, and then look at our palms. If it appears yellowish, then our skin tone is warm, and if it’s pink, we have a cool skin tone.

The more common test, however, is the silver/gold test. What you do is to hold a piece of gold or silver fabric next to your face, and then swop it with the other one. One of those colours should make your face brighter, and that gives an indication of your skin tone. The difference can be very obvious. Those that look better with gold are warm, while those that suit silver better are cool.

If your skin tone is warm you’ll suit warm colours, and if your skin tone is cool you’ll look better in cool colours. It doesn’t mean that colours on the other half of the colour wheel cannot be worn, but care should be taken when doing so.

I guess after going for this talk, I’ll be paying more attention to what colours suit me more. There’s a lot that can be learnt! I’m pretty glad I went for the talk, since you don’t really get to hear about things like this often, and going to a consultant for such advice is really expensive.

People may tend not to care too much about colours, but whether you’re conscious of it or not, the colours you wear have an impact on how you look and how others perceive you!

Hainan, China (14-19 Dec 2007)

As I promised… a post about my trip!

This is the first time I’ve been overseas with a tour group that only consists of the church people, which makes it more enjoyable because you know everyone! It’s also better in the sense that you can change the itinerary if the group wants to go to a particular place instead of the original one provided by the tour agency. I don’t know if I’ll ever have the chance to go with a group like this again, so that makes this trip even more special.

tour guide for a day

今日は疲れたけど、楽しかった。
私と日本からの高校生一緒にチャイナタウンや、ブギスなど行った。
皆は私の日本語が分かる、よかったね。

I’m dead beat right now.

There’s this programme in NTU where students currently studying Japanese (or have studied Japanese before) can bring Japanese students around when they visit Singapore. Today was my first time participating in the programme, and it was a pretty good experience.

The students had their itinerary planned beforehand, so we just had to bring them to the places that they wanted to visit. The students wanted to visit the cultural areas such as Chinatown, and unfortunately, I’m not very familiar with these places. Therefore, I’m glad that I decided to print out maps of Chinatown and Little India to bring along today, because they came in pretty useful. Maybe if I do this a few more times I’ll be able to get around without a map!

I’m pretty surprised that I didn’t have too much of a problem communicating with them, as it was one of my concerns before going for this. They seemed more comfortable with me speaking Japanese to them rather than them speaking English to me, even though I believe that I’ve learnt Japanese for a shorter time than they have learnt English. In any case, I’m really glad that they could understand my limited Japanese, and that I could understand most of what they were trying to say to me as well. Must improve on my Japanese!

We took プリクラ (purikura) before we headed back to the hotel. Purikura is what we call Neoprint over here, though seriously speaking, don’t you think that Neoprint sounds a bit tacky? Watching Japanese shows and reading some blogs came in useful, because I wouldn’t have known what they were trying to say when they asked if there was purikura here! I must say that the machines have really improved since the last time I used them (which was an extremely long time ago!). Saw this new machine which was huge, and allowed you to send the pictures to your handphone via infrared. I remember how, when I used to take pictures with my friends, we would randomly make our choices based on the pictures shown, because we had no idea what the Japanese words meant. Not that I understand everything now, but it’s a different experience going with people who know exactly what they’re doing. みんなは可愛いね!The pictures are a nice memento. :)

Hopefully they enjoyed their short stay here!

21st birthday celebrations!

I once said that I didn’t want a birthday party for my 21st, but to instead celebrate separately with my different groups of friends. And that was what I got!
